Guiding and Enhancing School Services for Students with Pediatric Illness Using PICS

Description: Twenty percent of students experience a significant pediatric illness during their academic career. Although the Pediatric Illness Classroom Survey (PICS) promotes defensible Section 504, OHI and TBI identification, it can accomplish far more in the hands of school psychologists. This is because teacher-completed PICS offers precise insights into the uniqueness of each classroom problem, sets the stage for supports, and captures baseline and follow-up evidence to determine success. This workshop helps school psychologists expand their role while benefiting students easily misunderstood and often underserved.

Workshop Objectives:

1. Participants will learn the classroom expressions of several pediatric illnesses.

2. Participants will learn how to advocate for appropriate supports within Section 504 and IDEA using PICS results.

3. Participants will learn how PICS can facilitate monitoring of interventions and supports.

Presenter information: Dr. David Wodrich

David L. Wodrich, PhD, founded Clinic-School Press, LLC, in 2024. Since 2014, he has been Professor Emeritus of Disability and Psychoeducational Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Wodrich is a former Director of Psychology at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied School Psychology, president of the American Board of School Psychology, the Arizona Psychological Association, and the AERA’s Brain, Neurosciences, and Education SIG. He is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 16) and the American Board of Professional Psychology. He has served as a school psychology trainer for more than 25 years in Illinois and Arizona.
